Methyl salicylate (also known as wintergreen oil or methyl benzoate)

A colorless to slightly yellow, transparent oily liquid with a strong odor reminiscent of wintergreen. It is soluble in ethanol and diethyl ether, slightly soluble in water, and gradually discolors upon exposure to air or over time. Its melting point is −8.6 °C, and its boiling point is 223.3 °C.

Industrial salicylic acid

This product is a pale pink to off-white crystalline powder, odorless. The dry substance has an initial melting point of 156°C or higher and sublimes under atmospheric pressure at temperatures above 76°C. Its aqueous solution is acidic and turns purple in the presence of FeCl₃. It is sparingly soluble in cold water, readily soluble in boiling water, highly soluble in alcohols and ethers, and slightly soluble in chloroform.
