The efficacy of methyl salicylate is fully demonstrated in everyday life.
We know that methyl salicylate, also known as wintergreen oil or sweet birch oil, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive herbal odor and a sweet‑spicy taste. Its molecular weight is 152.15; it has a melting point of −8.6°C and a boiling point of 218–224°C (with partial decomposition upon boiling). When boiled with water, it undergoes partial hydrolysis, releasing salicylic acid, which turns ferric chloride purple. It readily discolors when exposed to air and is the principal constituent of wintergreen oil. Upon contact with iron, it turns dark brown. It is used for emergency treatment of soft‑tissue injuries, such as sprains and muscle pain.
Methyl salicylate advantages:
1. This product possesses a distinct, strong aroma reminiscent of wintergreen. When used as a fragrance ingredient, it often serves as a flavoring agent in pharmaceutical preparations such as cavity medications and topical liniments. It is also incorporated into general fragrance formulations, for example, in blends featuring scents like myrtle. Additionally, it finds applications in oral care products, including chewing gum and mouthwashes. Methyl salicylate is further employed as a solvent and an intermediate in the production of insecticides, fungicides, fragrances, coatings, cosmetic inks, and fiber‑finishing agents.

2. It is commonly used as a fragrance agent in oral preparations and topical formulations, and also finds application in general fragrance compositions, such as in the blending of scents like those of magnolia. Additionally, it is employed in 11 types of pharmaceutical products, including chewing gum and mouthwash. It further serves as a solvent and as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceutical insecticides and fungicides.
3. It can be used in everyday fragrances such as tuberose, ylang‑ylang, and white orchid, and is particularly well suited for toothpaste and oral cleansers. It is also frequently employed in food‑grade fragrances like strawberry, grape, and vanilla.
