Methyl salicylate is also highly effective for treating bruises and sprains.

Methyl salicylate, also known as wintergreen oil or sweet birch oil, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive herbal odor and a sweet‑spicy taste. Its molecular weight is 152.15; it has a melting point of −8.6°C and a boiling point of 218–224°C (with partial decomposition upon boiling). When boiled with water, it undergoes partial hydrolysis, releasing salicylic acid, which turns ferric chloride purple. It readily discolors when exposed to air. Methyl salicylate is the principal constituent of wintergreen oil and turns dark brown in the presence of iron. It is used for the emergency treatment of soft‑tissue injuries, such as sprains and muscle pain.
