The stability of industrial-grade salicylic acid is quite good.

Industrial salicylic acid is a white, crystalline powder, odorless, with a taste that is initially slightly bitter and then turns pungent. Its melting point is 157–159°C, and it gradually discolors upon exposure to light. Its relative density is 1.44. The boiling point is approximately 211°C at 2.67 kPa, and it sublimes at 76°C. Under atmospheric pressure, rapid heating causes it to decompose into phenol and carbon dioxide. Industrial salicylic acid is soluble in 460 mL of water, 15 mL of boiling water, 2.7 mL of ethanol, 3 mL of acetone, 3 mL of diethyl ether, 42 mL of chloroform, 135 mL of benzene, 52 mL of turpentine, about 60 mL of glycerol, and 80 mL of petroleum ether. The addition of sodium phosphate, borax, or similar compounds can increase its solubility in water. An aqueous solution of industrial salicylic acid has a pH of 2.4. When reacted with an aqueous solution of ferric chloride, it produces a characteristic purple color.

Industrial salicylic acid can be used to exfoliate sensitive, seborrheic skin: With its lipid‑soluble properties and relatively large molecular weight, it targets only the superficial stratum corneum without affecting active epidermal cells. It offers superior stability and a lower potential for irritation, resulting in less cumulative irritation and inflammation compared with typical alpha‑hydroxy acids. Industrial salicylic acid is also effective for clearing comedones and minimizing enlarged pores: Its lipid‑solubility enables it to penetrate the stratum corneum and deep into the pores by integrating with lipids, while sparing the dermal tissue from irritation. It can travel along the sebaceous glands that secrete oil, reaching the deeper layers of the pores, thereby helping to dissolve accumulated, aged keratin and improving pore blockages. As a result, it can prevent the formation of acne, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and remove blackheads and whiteheads. Primarily used as a raw material in the pharmaceutical industry, it serves to synthesize drugs such as aspirin, sodium salicylate, salicylamide, analgin, phenyl salicylate, and schistosomiasis‑preventive agent No. 67. In the dye industry, it is employed in the production of mordant pure yellow, direct brown 3GN, and acid chrome yellow, among others. It is also utilized as a rubber vulcanization retarder and as a disinfectant and preservative.
