The extract of sublimed salicylic acid can truly be called a gift from nature.
Salicylic acid sublimes to form a white crystalline powder, odorless, with an initial slightly bitter taste that later turns pungent. Its melting point is 157–159°C, and it gradually discolors upon exposure to light. Its relative density is 1.44. The boiling point is approximately 211°C at 2.67 kPa, and it sublimes at 76°C. Under atmospheric pressure, rapid heating causes it to decompose into phenol and carbon dioxide. One gram of salicylic acid sublimes and dissolves in 460 mL of water, 15 mL of boiling water, 2.7 mL of ethanol, 3 mL of chloroform, 3 mL of acetone, 42 mL of chloroform, 135 mL of benzene, 52 mL of turpentine, about 60 mL of glycerol, and 80 mL of petroleum ether. The addition of sodium phosphate, borax, or similar agents can enhance the solubility of salicylic acid in water.

The pH of an aqueous solution of salicylic acid is 2.4. Salicylic acid forms a distinctive purple color when reacted with an aqueous ferric chloride solution. Salicylic acid, also known as o-hydroxybenzoic acid, is a white, crystalline substance that appears in needle‑like or powdered form and is soluble in ethanol and turpentine. It occurs naturally in willow bark, wintergreen leaves, and sweet birch. The term “salicylic” derives from the Latin word “Salix,” the botanical name for willow. Unlike alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), salicylic acid—a beta hydroxy acid (BHA)—has recently gained attention under the alternative name “B‑gentle skin acid,” creating quite a stir in the fields of cosmetic and anti‑aging medicine.
Salicylic acid, when sublimated, exfoliates the skin and boosts cellular turnover, helping to tighten pores and clear blackheads and whiteheads. It also effectively diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, restoring the skin’s radiance. There are numerous derivatives of salicylic acid; one of them is aspirin, a time‑tested medication widely used in medicine.
