The performance of sublimated salicylic acid is closely linked to its efficacy.

Salicylic acid sublimes as white blocks and powder, with a slight yellowish or pale pink tinge; it is odorless, mildly sweet at first, then turns pungent. It remains unchanged upon exposure to air. Above 76°C, it sublimes under atmospheric pressure. Upon heating at atmospheric pressure, it readily undergoes decarboxylation to yield phenol and carbon dioxide. Its aqueous solution exhibits an acidic reaction and gives a purple color with FeCl3. The substance is slightly soluble in water, soluble in boiling water, readily soluble in ethanol, and sparingly soluble in chloroform.
